Dr. Sufka received the 2021 John V. Atanasoff Discovery award last month from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at his alma mater Iowa State University. This award recognizes significant contributions to science. Dr. Sufka’s research discovered the first and still only drug efficacy screening paradigm for treatment-resistant depression which was award a US patent in 2015. More recently he and UM colleagues discovered a novel cannabidiol analog with significant clinical implications for treating pain in oncology settings and addressing the opioid abuse crisis. This compound received a US patent in 2020 and is currently licensed to a pharmaceutical for further development.
