Body image concerns and eating disorders disproportionately affect lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) individuals compared to their heterosexual, cisgender peers, in part due to experiences of harassment and discrimination as part of being a minoritized group. Despite this increased risk, few interventions have been developed to address and target the unique factors contributing to increased risk in LGBTQ+ individuals. This talk will review work from our group focused on 1) identifying specific risk factors for eating disorders in LGBTQ+ individuals, 2) developing and examining the efficacy of community-based eating disorder prevention programs for LGBTQ+ youth and adults, and 3) evaluating a novel treatment integrating LGBTQ-affirmative cognitive behavioral theory (CBT) with CBT for eating disorders.
